Summer camp is considered by many boys as their best Scouting time of the year. Scouts who attend summer camp tend to advance more rapidly and stick with Scouting longer. And camp provides a wide range of outdoor activities you won't find in many other summer camp experiences.
Troop 119 spends two weeks at the Griswold Scout Reservation every summer (usually during the first two weeks of August). Griswold is actually home to two different camps, Camp Bell and Hidden Valley, and we always spend one week at each.
Camp Bell offers a unique camping experience to Boy Scout troops interested in the fun of classic Scouting. During our week at Bell, we camp as a troop and patrols cook their own food (like on regular camping trips). But during the day, Scouts have access to all the facilities of a full Scouting outdoor program including a waterfront with swimming and boating options, shooting sports, high-ropes adventure and programs teaching classic scouting skills.
Hidden Valley allows Scouts to focus on advancement with merit badge classes taught every morning and troop and camp-wide activities organized in the afternoons. At Valley, we eat as a troop in the dining hall (no cooking), leaving more time for merit badges, outdoor activities and meeting up with other Scouts in other troops from around New England.
This year's Scout schedule includes:
Camp Bell: August 9-15, 2015
Hidden Valley: August 16-22, 2015
There are also opportunities for Scouts to attend Valley, Bell or other special programs in addition to or separate from the weeks Troop 119 is at camp. Logistics for participating in summer camp can be found here.
